Canon EOS R6 | One Month Review

The Canon R6… it has been a little over a month since I picked it up and made a video about switching brands from the Panasonic S1.  So do I regret it??  Absolutely.... not.  And I will hit on why.

Now let me preface this by saying, no, the R6 is not perfect, there is no perfect camera and II know there are going to be Sony shooters and Nikon shooters out there that watch this and I am not here to tell you why the R6 is better, I am just going to cover why, for me, I don't regret buying the Canon R6.

Over the past month I have gotten to shoot both photos and videos with the R6 and I do have to say that something I was concerned about before purchasing has really been a non factor is dynamic range.  You see the Panasonic S1 on paper and in tests has been shown to have more dynamic range.  I was worried coming from a camera that shoots in VLog to the R6 which can only shoot in CLog I would have to trade some image quality to get that frankly stellar AF performance of the R5 and R6.  Well I am happy to say, that after shooting for a few weeks now, I really don't notice any real world difference in dynamic range.  If you expose properly, which you should anyway, there is more than enough dynamic range in both video and photo modes.  CLog has actually been a blessing because if you shoot in low light, the image is super clean, much cleaner than that shooting in a more robust log profile.

Another huge perk has just been the RF15-35mm f/2.8 lens. I have fallen in love with the RF 15-35mm.  Now this is not a cheap piece of glass, and when paired with the R6, the whole combo comes in at around $5,000 US dollars.  BUT as someone who really enjoys shooting at those wider focal length, this is an absolute dream lens!  I do plan on doing a full review of this lens and the R6 in the future.

I really am struggling to come up with things that I hate about this camera.  The battery life, ergonomics and how it feels in the hand, the menu system, how the shutter sounds, it is all just very good.  I guess I wish it was cheaper and did 4K 120p?  But I think that really is it.

For what I do and shoot, it is about 50% photo, 50% video and I think the R6 really strikes a great balance between the two.  Yes, there are cameras that are better spec'd for just video like the A7SIII and their are camera's that have super high resolution sensors like the Panasonic S1R, but I have found the sensor on the Canon R6 to really be a jack of all trades and a master of none.  That is not to knock the R6, that is exactly what I expected from this camera and for that, I am more than happy.

I hope this helped you and if you have any questions or comments, please leave those below and I will do my best to answer them! Thank you for reading!
